Campanophyllum Cifuentes & R.H. Petersen 2003, in Cifuentes et al., Mycological Progress, 2, 285-295 (2003)

Diagnosis: A search for a species name through all the genera discussed below having pseudostipitate members brought to the surface an old name, Lentinus proboscideus, whose original diagnosis, as follows, is enough for us to consider that the name applies to the fungus here studied. Friess description follows (In latin): “L. (Resupinatus) proboscideus pileo lento vertice proboscideoporrecto stipitato lateraliter producto levi glabro lamellis e puncto excentrico radiantibus confertis inaequalibus lacero dentatis albis. Hab. Ad Costa Rica Örsted n. 59   Species nobilissima, 3 unc. usque longa, sed haud compacta, cum nulla descripta comparanda. Sed nulla adest icon, specimen in spiritu vini ceterum optime conservatum totum, e schedula inventoris lamellae alibi. Quad structuram et lamellas ceterum cum L. castoreo convenit.”

Genus tricholomataceus. Pileus dorsally pseudostipitate. Pseudostipe rudimentary to well-developed, excentric to lateral. Lamellae usually < 1 mm deep, thin, very crowded, arcuate, decreasing radially inside the pseudostipe, into attachment point, white to off-white. Spore print white, spores hyaline, rod shaped (dorsal view) or short cylindrical-elipsoid (lateral view and frontal view), smooth, thin walled, inamyloid. Leptopleurocystidia rare, digitiform. Cheilocystidia cylindrical clavate to utriform, sometimes pedunculate. Lamellar trama parallel, tramal hyphae with clamps. Pileipellis and pseudostipitipellis a cutis, sometimes with ascending hyphae. On rotten wood.
