Aurificaria

Aurificaria D.A. Reid 1963, in Dai, Y.C., Fungal diversity, 45, 131-343 (2010)

Diagnosis: Basidiocarps annual, pileate to substipitate, corky when fresh, hard corky or woody hard and light-weight when dry. Pileal surface yellowish to dark greyish brown or almost black with a cuticle, mostly glabrous, concentrically zoned or azonate. Pore surface yellowish brown, golden brown to rust-brown; pores angular or round. Context golden brown or umber-brown, hard corky. Hyphal system monomitic; generative hyphae simple septate; tissue darkening in KOH. Setae and setal elements absent; no cystidia. Basidiospores subglobose or ellipsoid, dark brown, olivaceous brown in KOH, thick-walled, smooth, IKI, CB+. On angiosperm trees in subtropical and tropical areas.

Index Fungorum Number: IF17136

Type species: Aurificaria indica (Massee) D.A. Reid 1963, in Dai, Y.C., Fungal diversity, 45, 131-343 (2010)

Notes: The systematic position of Aurificaria is somewhat unsettled. It is placed in a separate clade next to Fulvifomes Murrill and Phylloporia Murrill in a phylogenetic tree inferred by Wagner & Fischer (2002) from rDNA sequence data. Another species in the genus, Aurificaria luteoumbrina (Romell) D.A. Reid, was placed in a clade with Inonotus porrectus Murrill by recent molecular phylogeny (Larsson et al. 2006), and it was treated as Inonotus luteoumbrinus (Romell) Ryvarden (Ryvarden 2005).
