Schizocorticium

Schizocorticium Sheng H. Wu 2021, in Wu et al., Mycological Progress, 20, 769-779 (2021)

Etymology: From schizo (= split) + Corticium, referring to the split hymenial surface and resemblance of the traditional generic concept of Corticium (corticioid fungi without cystidia).

Diagnosis: Basidiomes resupinate, effused, adnate, membranaceous. Hymenial surface whitish or cream, smooth, more or less cracked; margin paler or concolorous, thinning, pruinose, or determinate. Hyphal system monomitic; hyphae nodose-septate. Subiculum bi-layered. Basal layer with dense to compact texture, hyphae horizontal, colorless, 24 μm diam. Medullary layer with somewhat loose to slightly dense texture, hyphae interwoven, colorless, 24 μm diam. Hymenial layer thickening, with fairly dense texture, hyphae more or less vertical, colorless, 25 μm diam. Oily material scattered throughout subiculum and hymenial layer. Crystals absent or rarely present in the section. Cystidia lacking. Hyphidia numerous, branched or not branched. Basidia clavate to narrowly clavate, sometimes slightly median-constricted, with four fairly stout and rigid sterigmata. Basidiospores narrowly ellipsoid to cylindrical, adaxially slightly concave or flattened, usually with a fairly prominent apiculus, smooth, thin-walled, homogenous or guttulate, IKI-, CB-.

Index Fungorum Number: IF830190

Type species: Schizocorticium magnosporum Sheng H. Wu & C.L. Wei 2021, in Wu et al., Mycological Progress, 20, 769-779 (2021)

Notes: Schizocorticium spp. are white-rot corticioid fungi. The diagnostic characters of this genus are effused basidiomes, whitish-cream, smooth and split hymenial surface, monomitic hyphal system, clamped hyphae, absence of cystidia, presence of hyphidia, clavate basidia, and thin-walled basidiospores that are inamlyloid, non-dextrinoid, and acyanophilous.
