Etymology: Robert L. Gilbertson American mycologist author of numerous works on polypores; The genus Poria. Gender feminine.
Diagnosis Basidiome annual, resupinate, whitish or yellowish, brownish when dried; subiculum thin, whitish, chalky when dry; tubes cheesy or waxy, tender and fragile, horny but very brittle when dry; pores angular or irregular, up to 1-2 mm in diam; margin white, soon disappearing, without cordons. Hyphal system dimitic; generative hyphae thin-walled, with clamps, hyaline; binding hyphae very distinct, thick-walled, with obtuse not tapering tips, hyaline or slightly yellowish, abundant in context and later also in tube trama. Hymenium not thickening; no cystidia, but some cystidioles present; basidia clavate, usually with narrow stipe-like base, 4sterigmate, with a basal clamp; basidiospores ellipsoid, thin-walled or with slightly thickened walls, smooth, hyaline. All elements of a basidiome non-amyloid and non-dextrinoid. Heterothallic, bipolar. Causes a brown rot of wood.
