Etymology. piriformis (lat.): pear shaped; spora (lat.): spore; referring to the characteristic shape of the chlamydospores.
Diagnosis: Genus belonging to the Basidiomycota; pearshaped chlamydospores; single spores forming at the tips of the hyphae; continuous parenthesomes covering the dolipores in the septa of the hyphae; hyphae penetrating and colonizing the cortex of plant roots.
