Etymology: Cryptotrichosporon refers to the intermediate position of the genus between Cryptococcus and Trichosporon, based on phenetic amd molecular systematics data, respectively. In addition, it refers to the cryptic nature of this trichosporonalean yeast, as it does not form hyphae or arthroconidia.

Diagnosis (In Latin): Genus basale Trichosporonalium. Cellulae polariter ex basi lata gemmantes. Capsula adest. Pigmentum dilute brunneum in agaro seminibus confecto.
