Etymology: From Greek, porpe = clamp, and pycnos =compact (referring to the pycnidia).
Diagnosis: Pycnidia superficial, conical, rostrate, hyaline or brightly coloured, gelatinous, unilocular, composed of fibulate hyphae. Pycnidial wall composed of several layers of interwoven hyphae. Conidiogenous cells annellidic. Conidia 1-celled, simple, produced in slimy mass.
